The little monks are making six different gestures in accordance with the Six Perfections in Buddhism, namely "generosity (dāna)", "morality (śīla)", "patience (kṣānti)", "vigor (vīrya)", "concentration (dhyāna)" and "wisdom (prajñā)". They remind us of how to live a good life and behave in a morally good way.

The six perfections are described in Buddhist commentaries as noble character qualities generally associated with enlightened beings.

They allow a Buddhist the opportunity and the means to follow the Buddha's Dharma. This allows them to reach enlightenment, which is what all Buddhists attempt to achieve in their lifetime.
